The Australian Government is currently building a 800-bed “Guantanamo-style” Immigration detention, Reception and Processing Centre on Christmas Island, 1400km off Australia’s northwest coast at a cost of $210 million. The project has residents concerned about the prospect of having imprisoned detainees and possible terrorism suspects as neighbours.
